DEEP RISING

BFTR not only designed the sequence, but constructed the physical set (including the vertical CD-ROM trays and keyboard setup), as well as created the computer graphics seen on the screens.

In addition to creating several hero computer graphics displays for the film, BFTR produced several visual effects shots for DEEP RISING, the Hollywood Pictures monster thriller, directed by Stephen Sommers and set aboard a South Seas ocean liner.

We were originally brought in to help clarify a story point through graphics: that an unknown hand sabotages the cruise ship Argonautica's systems, cutting them off from the outside world so that the ship can be robbed. A previous, non-graphics insert shoot had not achieved the exposition as needed, so Van and director Steve Sommers designed a brief new sequence in which the hands of an unseen perpetrator (later revealed to be one of the ship's crew) gains access to the central computer room and replaces the ROM discs that control the ship's communications, navigation and propulsion systems.

Van storyboarded the scene, on-set crew Glenn Cannon and John Lima built a custom console with three computer monitors and CD-ROM drives for an insert shoot, and artist Sage Greco animated a series of screen displays that went from normal to interrupt mode.

With this sequence taken care of, the production turned to BFTR for a handful of visual effects shots as well, to complement the work that was already being done by Dream Quest, ILM and Blur Studios. Again, each shot was expository and crucial: the computer sabotage sequence started with a long dolly shot towards a door, so artist Erich Ippen tracked and added a new door sign into the shot to replace a clumsy "computer room" sign. continued...
