BFTR created and composited a CG tentacle, and composited a stock explosion element into this shot.

Using Arete Digital Nature Tools, Adobe After Effects and Alias PowerAnimator, Erich and artist Gunther Schatz created a wholly CG shot from the POV of the monster as it rises from the depths and attacks the ship.

For another underwater sequence, artist Frank Vitale created and animated a CG creature tentacle for a brief shot showing one of the characters being dragged backwards underwater in a cloud of bubbles and detonating a grenade in his hand. For this shot, the stock explosion element and the interactive light was composited by artist Steve Walker.

Steve and Erich augmented a miniature pyro shot of the PT boat crashing into the cruise ship with an ElectricImage surfboard flying up past camera as a piece of debris, which became necessary to establish in order to save the life of a character whose death preview audiences objected.

At left is the explosion enhancement shot BFTR handled, which features a computer generated surfboard; at right is our underwater shot of the cruiser, from the point of view of the monster as it attacks the ship. Check out the shot as it appears in the film: Quicktime, 2.5MB
