Just after being dropped on the garbage planet, the soldier realizes his predicament as the camera pulls away from him to reveal the mounds of garbage on the wasteland planet. For this dramatic shot, Kurt Russell was photographed against a bluescreen with the camera pulling backwards. Extending the camera move in digital, Matte World created the world around him with digital and miniature mounds of garbage, and real skies heavily color corrected and manipulated.

Matte World composited this miniature ship and foreground element against its sky elements, and even added foreground dust elements to add depth to the shot. To learn more about Matte World's work on the film, go to http://www.matteworld.com/soldier.html.
